On Overwatch

So here’s the thing, I didn’t plan on getting Overwatch. Mainly because I was concerned about the price vs the amount of time I would spend playing it. The base version for PC costs $40 (US) and the Origins edition with all the bonus goodies costs $60 (US). I subscribe to a $1/hour belief that if a game costs me $40 then I should get a minimum of 40 hours out of it. While Overwatch is described more along the lines of cooperative team based shooter, it is still a first person shooter. Those types of games have typically run their course for me within a few hours. Now that isn’t to say that I won’t get bored with Overwatch before I get 60 hours out of it (I did get the Origins edition). I just think that if it is like Hearthstone where you can play it every once … Read more…

On catching up.

So I guess it has been over a month since my last post. Honestly I haven’t really felt all that motivated to write much. Been pretty busy time at work which is usually where I do all the writing. So just to give a few updates I guess. I bought a new computer, and it took almost a month for it to actually come in. I wound up getting an Alienware Area-51 desktop, 4 TB hard drive, 16 GB ram and an NVidea Geforce 970 with 4GB Ram. It’s a beast, and I’ve barely had a chance to use it. Within the first couple of days I started having issues with the network card telling me it was missing registry entries or something. I haven’t had time to really dig in to it, so the only solution I’ve managed to get working at this point is turning the PC off, … Read more…

On A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Dark Zone

So lately I’ve been playing The Division on PC and while I’m not doing a full review just yet I just wanted to share a “funny” story that happened tonight while playing. To give a bit of background here, the Dark Zone is the area in The Division where you will run in to other players, and is supposed to be where you go for end game content as well as trying to find the best gear in the game. The problem here is that if you kill another player you get marked as a rogue agent, and can then be hunted down by other players and killed. Upon dying you lose experience and all the items you picked up in this zone. So realistically speaking why would you want to do that unless you’re just a jerk? So today I was playing co-op with one of my friends and … Read more…

On Ultimate Chicken Horse

So, I’ve mentioned this on twitter already but one of the games I demo’d at Pax South was Ultimate Chicken Horse from Clever Endeavour. I would honestly say that this was my favorite game from Pax and I’m looking forward to it coming out. Before I get in to it though here’s a video from their Youtube page. I think we came across this game some time on Friday and I watched some of the guys I was there with play, but I didn’t. We walked back over the next day when our friend Rae and her brother were there and did play that time. I guess we were playing on party mode where you and your opponents get to choose from a limited number of object to put down in the level to try to prevent other people from finishing. I wound up getting killed by my own traps … Read more…

On A Life Changing Game

So, this is becoming routine as the month goes on, but, I’m using another writing prompt from the Blaugust forum. The topic is to talk about a game that changed your life. Technically for me there are three games that have shaped my personal life. The first one is Phantasy Star Online for the Sega Dreamcast. The thing about that game is that it really wasn’t a beneficial to me in a normal way. The game was released sometime during my freshman year of college, and I spent way too much time playing it. I’ve never really been a fan of school, and I had previously had attendance issues, so college was the worst time for me to find a game that I wanted to play more than I wanted to go to class. The problem is that I found this in PSO. I would pretty much stay up late … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Heroic Naxxramas 2

So today’s post won’t be the longest post, I start on call at work today and haven’t really thought up a good topic just yet. So I’m going to simply write up a follow up post to the one from yesterday where I talked a little bit about what I was doing in Hearthstone over the weekend. During my lunch break yesterday I did a little research on decks that had successfully beaten heroic Sapphiron and Kel’Thuzad since that was my goal for the week. For Sapphiron the problem that I was running in to was that most mage decks, well any really but I went with mage, require you to have a specific rare/legendary card that I just didn’t have. In the case of the mage deck most tend to want you to have Ice Block, which makes you immune to lethal damage when triggered. The problem is that … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Heroic Naxxramas

So I’m pretty sure this is something that I’ve talked about before, but after spending the weekend playing Hearthstone again I feel like I should reiterate the point. *AHEM* RNG can be a real pain in the rear. As previously mentioned I’ve been working through Heroic Naxxramas in Hearthstone over the last week or so, mostly trying to get through at least one boss per day. As of last night I am up to Sapphiron, leaving just that one and Kel’Thuzad in order to earn the special card back for completing the Naxxramas adventure on heroic. I did manage to clear the four bosses in the construct quarter using decks I found at Hearthpwn, but got stuck on that stupid dragon for four hours before finally giving up for the night. I probably would have gone a bit longer, but today is Monday and I can’t just not go to … Read more…

On A Quick Note About Warcraft Subscription Tokens

This morning I was going through twitter and saw a tweet mentioning that Blizzard was going to be adding in a way for people to play WoW by buying tokens on the in game auction house. This means that if you have enough gold (mad farming skills) you can pay for your game time without paying with real money. I’m not really sure of the popularity of this idea,¬†as I saw plenty of complaints about it already, mostly relating it to gold sellers. Personally I feel that as long as this is done right that it could be a good way of allowing more people the opportunity to play. My main concern is that the community apparently decides on the price of the token. People being people will start out by trying to take advantage of this by charging obscene amounts for the tokens. I would rather that this be … Read more…

On Microtransactions

Recently I have been reading reports that say there is speculation about microtransactions appearing in the next Mortal Kombat game (Mortal Kombat X). Whether or not this is true has yet to be determined. Personally I hope that this is not true for one reason: I don’t think that full retail games should require them. Now I understand the reason for cash shops or microtransactions in mobile games, or really any MMO that is based on a Free-To-Play system. For mobile games that is the most common source of revenue. Most of the popular game are free to download and the developer has to have some means of compensation. Same as MMO’s such as ArcheAge where you don’t pay a monthly subscription fee. I’m totally fine with that. Those items generally are only cosmetic and don’t give any kind of advantage. My problem with games like Assassins Creed Unity, Dragon … Read more…

On Annoying Platformer Controls

So this weekend I finished up re-playing Assassins Creed Black Flag and decided I didn’t really feel like going for 100% completion a second time. So that left me trying to figure out what to play in order to keep myself busy. I have several console games that I could play through, and a pretty size-able Steam backlog of games. Not to mention the various MMO’s I can play, or want to get back in to. I ended up trying the MMO’s first, WoW followed up by some Archeage. Wasn’t really feeling it with either of those. I feel like with the WoW expansion coming out in a couple weeks that I’d rather save all the new quests until the xp actually goes towards something. Archeage is just plain hard for me to get in to. I have a decently spec’d PC so I shouldn’t be having any issues with … Read more…
