On Origins Game Fair – Wrap Up

So, over the last couple of days I spread out all the games I was interested in playing. Today I wanted to at least list out the ones that I’m really looking forward to, or have already purchased. I think I’ll be limiting myself to actual purchases though, because frankly board games can be just as expensive, if not more, than video games. So I have to be careful about my budget. Ideally I would have the opportunity to play the games before purchasing them, but that all would depend on my local shop getting a demo copy or someone I know purchasing one. The problem then comes down to availability. Some of the games I’m interested in won’t be widely available (ie mass market) which will make getting a copy difficult. Up till now I’ve relied on my local game shop and Amazon when it comes to purchases. While … Read more…

On Origins Game Fair – Part 3

The third and almost final part of this series I have dubbed, “Where did my money go?”. This is the last of the games I was interested in getting. Again, these are not in any particular order, just all games that I am interested either in purchasing or playing. Summit: The Board Game – Inside Up Games Another interesting game where you’re trying to climb a mountain. There are three ways to play, solo, co-op, competitive. You work your way up the mountain using tiles. The goal is to get to the summit and then back to base camp without dying. It doesn’t look like a difficult game, but I’m having a hard time explaining it with words. I’d like to try this out so hoping that someone I know picks it up. Unreal Estate – Grand Gamers Guild This was not only an interesting game, but was presented in … Read more…

On Origins Game Fair – Part 2

Welcome to part 2 of what I like to call, “Why do I even need to save money anyways”. I’m just going to pick up where I left off on the previous post, which was originally one very long post. These games are in no particular order of how much I want to get them. Yamatai – Days of Wonder I’m not really sure I can explain this game, but it looks amazing and I want to play it so much.Since I can’t really describe it here’s a video trailer for it. A little bit of a secret, I love Days of Wonder and Asmodee. Dice Forge – Asmodee As with every Asmodee game that I’ve seen the artwork is amazing. This is a dice building game where you build your dice by snapping in pieces that look like lego blocks. The goal is to get victory points which you … Read more…

On Origins Game Fair – Part 1

This post could also be called “Shut up and take my money”. So first off, has it really been since March that I wrote anything on here? I am such a slacker, but there really hasn’t been all that much to talk about. I did play Horizon Zero Dawn so there might be a post about that soon. E3 also just wrapped up so there will also probably be a post on that as well. However today I am going to talk about the goings on of the last week. Starting last Wednesday I spent most of the day watching the BoardGameGeek twitch stream of the Origins Game Fair on Twitch. I was only able to pay some amount of attention since I had it running in the background at work, but I did watch all day Saturday and Sunday. I did miss some stuff here and there because of … Read more…

On Board Games and Pizza (or Salad)

So last night I attended another board game night, this time held at a local pizza place. I got there a little bit early to find a good parking spot..Oh who am I kidding I got there an hour early. Mainly I got there early cause, like I said I wanted a good parking spot, and also because knowing myself if I got there late and couldn’t find a spot I would have used that as an excuse to not go. I have told myself that I need to go out more often and board games seem to make talking to people I don’t know a bit easier. I also promised someone I would be there and I don’t like breaking a promise if I can avoid it. So while I waited I sat down and ordered a salad..yes a salad at a pizza place. I’m on a diet don’t … Read more…

On Board Game Night

So, first off I guess technically I failed with the posting every weekday thing for August since I missed two days last week as well as yesterday. But I have an great excuse, was way to busy at work to do any typing of the words that show up on your screen. So, I have mentioned on Twitter that I went out Saturday night for the first time in forever. I’m not the most social person, at least to people I have never met before, so going out to a social thing where I knew absolutely zero people is not something I would normally do. However, I decided to not be a hermit and talked myself in to driving in to town, or well the city since I do in fact live in a town not a van down by the river. The local game store was holding an adults … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Karazhan Launch and Prologue

So yesterday saw the release of the next Hearthstone adventure “One Night In Karazhan” which is the next 4 wing single player set of challenges. This will add a total of 45 new cards over the course of the adventure which can be used in online matches or adventures. This release was a bit different then the previous adventures because there was no pre-order period. Instead the purchase option became available only when the adventure came online. Another difference was that they included a free to everyone prologue mission where you play as Medivh with his overpowered mage deck against Prince Malchezaar. Each player starts off with 30 health and a 30 point shield, so essentially 60 health. Once you work through this mission it will unlock the first wing, once purchased. Once you finish the match you get some new cards and probably a prompt to go buy the … Read more…

On Elder Scrolls Legends – Beta Impressions

So first off, today is the first day of the yearly thing my friend Bel tries to organize where people commit to posting as much as possible during the month of August. Previous years it involved posting daily for the entire month, which is seriously hard to do. This year it has shifted slightly and while you can still choose to post every day if you want it isn’t required. This year there were scheduling options, of which I have chosen weekday blogs. Meaning I’m going to try, emphasis on try, to post Monday through Friday for every week in August. I’m not entirely sure how a public list will be handled, but you can head over to his blog and check out some of the other participants. So for my first post, I’m going to talk a little bit about the Elder Scrolls Legends beta that I played over … Read more…

On A Post Pax Post – Part 2

So I had an interesting time at Pax South. This was not only my first Pax, but my first gaming focused convention. I ended up taking a full week off of work even though the convention was only for 3 days. Took a day to visit my friends family in Houston and stayed the night with them. Drove out of Houston the day before Pax started to head to San Antonio. I will state, that without a doubt I hate the roads in Texas so very, very much. I did eventually get to my hotel, and made the mistake of taking a “city view” room. Which meant that I had a room facing the interstate, which meant it was constantly noisy. So the first day I was there (pre-pax) I spent a couple hours walking around the Riverwalk area. Stopped to see the Alamo, because I had never seen it … Read more…

On Following Your Friends To New Games

So, if anyone noticed I did not write anything yesterday, which kind of breaks my posting every week day goal. In my defense real life crap came up and I just didn’t have the time. One of the responsibilities I have on the project I work on is taking an on call shift once every five weeks. This involves a lot of small things, but mostly making sure things are working. Yesterday we started having issues with one of our servers in what we are now referring to as “Fileocolypse”. So yeah, just didn’t have time to come up with coherent thoughts. Today I passed that on to someone else and it’s not my problem anymore. So for a quick post I though I’d talk a little bit about how we choose games. I think I’ve touched on this before, and hopefully I haven’t already written this post. What got … Read more…
