On Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Impressions & Tips (no story spoilers).

So right off the bat I’m going to say I got the Wii U version of this because, while I will probably get the switch eventually, I didn’t feel I could justify esentially spending over $400 on one game. This covers the cost of the console, the game + season pass, and a pro controller. Now, I did still end up spending a lot of money to play this because I did buy the game, season pass and Wii U pro controller to play it. So really the only difference is the addition of the $300 of the system. That I couldn’t justify. Right now I am not what I would consider very far in to the game. I have made it out of the starter area and have done a couple of story related quests to see if what skills/items that would get me. I feel like this is … Read more…

On Scheduling Game Time

As of today now there are 6 days left in August (not including today), getting close to the end here. Today I thought I’d talk a little bit of a mixture of gaming and personal stuff. So bear with me here. So if you keep up with me on twitter, or have seen other times I have mentioned this you’ll know that early in July I lost my best friend in the world to depression. It’s been a difficult period in my life because frankly I’ve never had to deal with losing anyone I cared about. To say it’s been difficult is a bit of an understatement but it’s hard to describe how hard it is to come to terms with something like this. The one thing that seems to help is by keeping myself distracted. Now I don’t mean to say I’m not pretending things didn’t happen, I just … Read more…

On Wii U – Some Thoughts

Yesterday I mentioned that I got a Wii U which, admittedly, was a spur of the moment decision. I’ve always intended to buy one, but had been waiting for a new Zelda game to come out. I know there is one in the works, but with watching Mario Maker videos really got me excited and is ultimately why I made the purchase. It did present one problem that was going to come up sooner or later… I didn’t have enough space on my surge protector, well mostly. The one I was using has 14 plugs on it, but they are all bunched together and several of the things plugged in to it were wide, or long, just generally not the size of a standard plug. This meant that I didn’t have anywhere to put something new. So last night on the way home from work I stopped and got two … Read more…

On Wii’s and Wii U’s

So, I finally did it. I broke down and bought a Wii U. It probably wasn’t the best decision from a financial point of view, but I’ve been wanting one for a long time and with the release of Mario Maker coming up soon I felt like it was a good time to make the purchase. Now, as I’m typing this I haven’t hooked it up yet because, well, I’m still at work. I have 1 1/2 hours left till I can leave, and I’m ready to just go home and hook it up and play some Mario. I’ve mentioned it before but I have always had a love for Nintendo. I might not buy a lot of their games, but the 8 bit console was the first console I ever had. Growing up we always had the latest Nintendo system, which was usually a x-mas gift given as something … Read more…

On Gaming Roots

So one thing that I have seen other people talk about at some point is what games have been most influential to them in their lifetime. To be honest I’m not sure I could pinpoint exactly what games might fit in to that category for me. Certainly there are games that I just always remember as being my favorites, but I can’t really think of any that really changed my outlook on things. So instead of writing about games that might have been super influential I am going to talk a little bit about how I got in to gaming in the first place. Keep in mind I’m 31 (for another month) so most of the games I feel got me in to gaming will have come out late 80’s early 90’s. Most of them pre Sony & Microsoft days. The first time I can remember playing a video game … Read more…

On Okay Nintendo, You Win

Today’s post is going to be a bit short. I actually almost forgot to write anything at all to be honest. As things usually go today was a fairly busy day at work starting off with a nice long meeting that almost put me to sleep followed by a mad rush to do a few code changes and lots of SQL scripts. So as I mentioned previously, this week is E3 week and all sorts of announcements are coming out and game trailers are being released. One of the games that I’ve been waiting a long time to hear about is the new Zelda title on the Wii U. Now, here’s the thing, I don’t own a Wii U. Up until now I have not felt like there has been enough of a reason to buy the system. I know there are some great Mario titles out there, but that … Read more…

On Console Exclusivity

This week E3 is going on and the big companies are showing off their new games and product pitches. Yesterday both Microsoft and Sony held their big presentations talking about upcoming titles and how focused they are on providing content. Both companies tend to talk about their console exclusive titles, but also talk about cross console releases as well. The thing is both companies kept talking about how they’d have this title first or have this amount of exclusive content that you won’t get anywhere else. Every time I heard that I want to get a rolled up newspaper and whack the presenter on the nose saying “Bad presenter, stop withholding content from your players!”. I think it is dumb to separate what players get just because they may choose one console over another. Personally I own a PS4 (for arguments sake keeping this next gen). I don’t own a … Read more…

On New Game Plus

So kind of a topic stretch today, I’m doing this a bit earlier in the day than normal (it’s currently 5:45am) because I start my on call week today. This means I may be a bit too busy during the day to type up a long post, so I figure I’d do it before the world came crashing down. I’d say I would hope for a quiet week but that is never guaranteed. That being said, today’s topic is New Game+ modes in games. I’m not exactly sure how many games have done this lately but I know of a few. Namely Dark Souls 1 & 2 and the latest Zelda game A Link Between Worlds. On the off chance you’ve never heard of new game + mode the gist of it is that once you finish the game on normal difficulty it lets you start over from the beginning … Read more…
