On A quick note on Assassins Creed Rogue

So, first off, I haven’t gotten very far in this game yet. Not even two hours of gameplay so far. I’m a bit behind in even starting this game because it’s been sitting in my “to-do” stack since it came out.

So to start off with, I’m pretty aggravated at this game, and so this is not going to be a kind post.

From what I’ve played so far this game should have just been called “Black Flag 2” (the subtitle to Assassins Creed 4 was Black Flag). The reason I say this is that it is almost exactly the same game. Which is not saying much because I’m sure most of the games in this series are all pretty much the same game. That isn’t to say I am not a fan of the series as a whole. This game by itself just seems to be very much a rush job.

The reason I say that is because a lot of the game assets I’ve seen so far were reused from Black Flag. Both games are fairly “sailing the seven seas”-centric. In that it appears to have a lot of sailing. This itself is not a problem, not that I was a huge fan of all the naval combat and sailing around stuff, but hey that’s pretty accurate for the time period so whatever. What annoys me is that the songs that your crew sings, the “sea shanties”, are so far identical to what was in the previous game. You would think that pirates would learn some new songs over a 20-30 year period. Honestly though, that is not even that important since I just do what I did in 4 and turn them off.

What really made me mad last night was that the game locked up my PS3. I was playing through the story and got to a cutscene, after exiting the cutscene my system froze. I had to do a hard shutdown of the system because nothing would respond. My theory is that they put so much in to the graphics engine to “push” it that it cause the video card to overheat and lock everything up. Maybe this isn’t an issue with the newer models of the PS3, but the one I have, while not the original, is not exactly new.

I’m not going to comment on the story aspect of the game yet, because I’m not very far in to it. As far as I know the story is solid and worth playing through. And despite this problem I will finish the game. I love the series and I want to play the game.
