On Solo Tavern Brawls and Seasonal Overwatch

So to keep today’s post from being super short I’m going to talk about two things. The first of which is that Hearthstone released its first Solo Tavern Brawl. Now Hearthstone is no stranger to single player content as they have the Adventure mode, but this is the first time they’ve had a single player brawl. Normally brawls involve playing with, or against another player similar to standard/wild formats and allow you to complete daily quests for gold. This time however it’s just you and your deck versus the city of Stormwind. The brawl name “Storming Stormwind” has a simple mechanic, hit it as much as you can until you die. The trick is that you can’t lose. The npc “boss” that you’re fighting starts with a couple of things. It starts with 1 hit point, which goes up after every hit (instead of going down) so you can’t actually … Read more…

On Elder Scrolls Legends – Beta Impressions

So first off, today is the first day of the yearly thing my friend Bel tries to organize where people commit to posting as much as possible during the month of August. Previous years it involved posting daily for the entire month, which is seriously hard to do. This year it has shifted slightly and while you can still choose to post every day if you want it isn’t required. This year there were scheduling options, of which I have chosen weekday blogs. Meaning I’m going to try, emphasis on try, to post Monday through Friday for every week in August. I’m not entirely sure how a public list will be handled, but you can head over to his blog and check out some of the other participants. So for my first post, I’m going to talk a little bit about the Elder Scrolls Legends beta that I played over … Read more…

On A Post Blaugust Post…Post

A bit of a secondary follow up to Blaugust now that it’s over. One of the takeaways from this month is that I don’t think daily blogging is exactly my thing. That isn’t to say I don’t like to write, because I do find it enjoyable, I just have high expectations on myself that shorter posts don’t exactly meet. I realize though, from my own reading habits that shorter posts are probably better in the long run because people don’t have time to read an essay every day. So I had a couple of thoughts about how to improve the content that I’m presenting. The first thing is that I’ll be writing a bit more than “whenever I feel like it”. This means sticking to a schedule, which I’m good with schedules. The problem I tend to have is finding the time to write something I find meaningful. I’m not … Read more…

On Blaugust – A Retrospective

So today marks the last day of the Blaugust challenge to write a post a day for the entire month of August. So I figured last post should be a short wrap up of things. For me the whole blogging daily thing has been a bit of a challenge. One of the more challenging things that I encountered was simply to find the time to write something every day. I feel that when I write I don’t like to be rushed, but most of the time when I post I’m doing it during my lunch break at work which doesn’t afford me a lot of time to put together something. The last couple of weeks I’ve been getting up extra early and getting to work around 6am just so that I would have plenty of uninterrupted time to write.I think most people that blog don’t just make a whimsical decision … Read more…

On “The Man From U.N.C.L.E”

So today was another movie day. Like I said yesterday, mostly just feel like I need to get out a bit more. Today’s movie was the one I wanted to see yesterday “The Man From U.N.C.L.E” starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander and is based off a 1960’s TV series. The show takes place some time in 1963 during the Cold War when there was a lot of tension between the U.S and Russia over nuclear weapons. Personally, I liked the movie. It took the right amount of time setting things up and moved quickly. I liked the visual presentation and the acting was pretty good. I think the movie suffers in one aspect, and that is that there is an ever growing audience that cannot relate to anything in this movie, other than that it is a spy movie. It has been long enough now since the … Read more…

On Ant-Man

So today was a bit of an adventure. Earlier this week I sent an email out to my friends trying to pull together people to go see a movie with. One of the things I’ve decided I need to do to not stay curled up in a depression ball on weekends is to try to go out and do stuff, or at least just go out. Due to conflicting schedules we decided to post-pone for a couple of weeks. However I still planned to go see a movie, and pulled in one of my other friends that I also work with and we wound up going to see Ant-Man. The adventure part was that initially I wanted to go to an early showing of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E” but my friend didn’t want to get out before the afternoon started. If you’re wondering why I wanted to see a really … Read more…

On Strategy Guides

Today’s topic is sort of a follow up to the post yesterday about buying collectors editions of games. I posted this as a writing prompt to the blaugust forum yesterday, for the express purpose of doing this: How do you feel about using strategy guides for games? Do you buy them or look for user guides online? I’ll be honest that I do use guides from time to time. There are times where I just buy them to use on a second playthrough, or because it includes, or is bundled with, an art book. Now, I don’t really use the guides all that much, only if I really get stuck on something, or like I said already, a second playthrough. My main use for guides are for collectibles, which are probably one of my favorite things to do in games. The second part of that topic is whether or not … Read more…

On Collectors Editions

Today’s post brought to you buy a writing prompt, but this time one that I came up with just now. How do you feel about buying collectors editions? Why do you buy them, or why don’t you? Personally I have mixed feeling on collectors editions of games. I think they’re good to have around for people that like to buy them. I don’t think that them being offered hurts anybody, unless you are spending money on them that you should be using for other things, like paying bills and eating. But if you have the means to buy them then more power to you. I don’t tend to buy a lot of collectors editions myself because in a lot of instances I don’t feel like the things that come with them are enough of an incentive to pay $100+ (89€/65£). Does that ever stop me from buying them? Nope, not … Read more…

On Other Media – Blaugust Day 26

Today will be another writing prompt, mainly cause I’m running out of ideas, and partially cause it’s 7 am and I’m not entirely awake yet. If you were to create content for a different medium what would you choose? Videos, Streaming, Podcast, Something Else? What about that medium appeals to you as a content creator? So starting over, after a few iterations I will say that if I felt that I could do it I would like to do more streaming. I think it is fun to watch people who are good at it, and I wish that was something I was better at. I do stream on occassion from my PS4, but never for a very long time and I don’t talk while I’m playing. Maybe this is something I could do on a more regular basis, even if was just for a couple hours on a weekend. I … Read more…

On Scheduling Game Time

As of today now there are 6 days left in August (not including today), getting close to the end here. Today I thought I’d talk a little bit of a mixture of gaming and personal stuff. So bear with me here. So if you keep up with me on twitter, or have seen other times I have mentioned this you’ll know that early in July I lost my best friend in the world to depression. It’s been a difficult period in my life because frankly I’ve never had to deal with losing anyone I cared about. To say it’s been difficult is a bit of an understatement but it’s hard to describe how hard it is to come to terms with something like this. The one thing that seems to help is by keeping myself distracted. Now I don’t mean to say I’m not pretending things didn’t happen, I just … Read more…
