On Weekend Round-Up (10/17-10/18)

So as most weekends do this past one went by pretty quick. As usual I really didn’t get anything accomplished, unless you count watching movies and playing games as getting things accomplished. This weekend consisted of three games, and six movies. Game wise I tried playing some more Destiny, and continue to struggle with it now that I’m at the “farming” stage of the game. Maybe it’s me but I really don’t feel like I enjoy farming in this game. Not really much to this as I probably only played it for an hour or two all weekend. I’m just having a hard time with the game. I feel like it could be much better than it is, and maybe my lack of enjoyment comes from only being able to do the solo content. The second game is Assassins Creed Unity. I want to play through the story again before … Read more…

On Weekend Roundup

So I’m going to try something new today which is to talk about some things that I did over the weekend. Not that there is going to be any constincy to what I actually do during the weekend so topics may vary a bit. I’m kind of stealing the idea from my friend Bel who has been doing week in review style post for the last couple of weeks. So this weekend turned in to mostly movies with a little bit of time spent playing video games. I’ll start off with the gaming since it is a bit shorter. Primarily I played Destiny because I’m trying to get my money’s worth out of it before Assassins Creed Syndicate comes out in a couple of weeks. I can’t say I really did much because I’m at that point where the only way for me to get gear is to try to … Read more…

On Prepping For PAX

So a couple weeks ago I mentioned that I had bought tickets to PAX South and reserved my hotel for the event. While doing this I had thought about how much walking/standing around that I’ll wind up doing and that if I want to not be suffering the entire time I needed to get my body ready for the stress. So that leads to the last couple of weeks at the gym, where I have decided that I should go as often as I can and walk a minimum of 9 miles per week. Last week I hit my 9 doing 3 miles a day. This meant I went to the gym 4 times last week, 3 of which were for walking plus my regular weight lifting night with one of my friends. I had wanted to get to 12 miles, but when Friday evening rolled around I just didn’t … Read more…

On Destiny The Taken King

So after hearing positive things from some friends who were playing I decided to shell out to buy “The Taken King” expansion for Destiny. Before this weekend I have not played Destiny since a few weeks since its original release, mainly because it had the same issue I have with most, if not all, online games. That is that once you finish the story they expect you to run dungeons, or in this case strikes or to do pvp in order to get better gear. While it is possible to obtain better gear through random drops you were better off doing these other things. So before I get in to the Taken King content I will say that I also played through the DLC content that came before it before starting on the expansion content. These DLC’s were “The Dark Below” and “The House of Wolves”. I don’t remember the … Read more…

On The Lack of Recent Posts

So this month I haven’t really posted any new entries. This is not a result from burnout from Blaugust but mainly from me being lazy. I’ve been wanting to write about my experience playing Metal Gear Solid 5 but thought I would wait until I finished the game before talking about it. The problem is that this game is massive, and it has taken me much longer to finish than I thought. I also didn’t want to write a reactionary post about how I felt about the game because early on it was incredibly frustrating. At this point I have finished up the “main” story and there are some extra follow up story missions to do. Also working on the additional content that is available such as base building, staff recruitment and side missions. Unrelated to that I have bought tickets to go to PAX South in January and have … Read more…

On A Post Blaugust Post…Post

A bit of a secondary follow up to Blaugust now that it’s over. One of the takeaways from this month is that I don’t think daily blogging is exactly my thing. That isn’t to say I don’t like to write, because I do find it enjoyable, I just have high expectations on myself that shorter posts don’t exactly meet. I realize though, from my own reading habits that shorter posts are probably better in the long run because people don’t have time to read an essay every day. So I had a couple of thoughts about how to improve the content that I’m presenting. The first thing is that I’ll be writing a bit more than “whenever I feel like it”. This means sticking to a schedule, which I’m good with schedules. The problem I tend to have is finding the time to write something I find meaningful. I’m not … Read more…

On Blaugust – A Retrospective

So today marks the last day of the Blaugust challenge to write a post a day for the entire month of August. So I figured last post should be a short wrap up of things. For me the whole blogging daily thing has been a bit of a challenge. One of the more challenging things that I encountered was simply to find the time to write something every day. I feel that when I write I don’t like to be rushed, but most of the time when I post I’m doing it during my lunch break at work which doesn’t afford me a lot of time to put together something. The last couple of weeks I’ve been getting up extra early and getting to work around 6am just so that I would have plenty of uninterrupted time to write.I think most people that blog don’t just make a whimsical decision … Read more…

On “The Man From U.N.C.L.E”

So today was another movie day. Like I said yesterday, mostly just feel like I need to get out a bit more. Today’s movie was the one I wanted to see yesterday “The Man From U.N.C.L.E” starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander and is based off a 1960’s TV series. The show takes place some time in 1963 during the Cold War when there was a lot of tension between the U.S and Russia over nuclear weapons. Personally, I liked the movie. It took the right amount of time setting things up and moved quickly. I liked the visual presentation and the acting was pretty good. I think the movie suffers in one aspect, and that is that there is an ever growing audience that cannot relate to anything in this movie, other than that it is a spy movie. It has been long enough now since the … Read more…

On Ant-Man

So today was a bit of an adventure. Earlier this week I sent an email out to my friends trying to pull together people to go see a movie with. One of the things I’ve decided I need to do to not stay curled up in a depression ball on weekends is to try to go out and do stuff, or at least just go out. Due to conflicting schedules we decided to post-pone for a couple of weeks. However I still planned to go see a movie, and pulled in one of my other friends that I also work with and we wound up going to see Ant-Man. The adventure part was that initially I wanted to go to an early showing of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E” but my friend didn’t want to get out before the afternoon started. If you’re wondering why I wanted to see a really … Read more…

On Strategy Guides

Today’s topic is sort of a follow up to the post yesterday about buying collectors editions of games. I posted this as a writing prompt to the blaugust forum yesterday, for the express purpose of doing this: How do you feel about using strategy guides for games? Do you buy them or look for user guides online? I’ll be honest that I do use guides from time to time. There are times where I just buy them to use on a second playthrough, or because it includes, or is bundled with, an art book. Now, I don’t really use the guides all that much, only if I really get stuck on something, or like I said already, a second playthrough. My main use for guides are for collectibles, which are probably one of my favorite things to do in games. The second part of that topic is whether or not … Read more…
