On A Life Changing Game

So, this is becoming routine as the month goes on, but, I’m using another writing prompt from the Blaugust forum. The topic is to talk about a game that changed your life. Technically for me there are three games that have shaped my personal life. The first one is Phantasy Star Online for the Sega Dreamcast. The thing about that game is that it really wasn’t a beneficial to me in a normal way. The game was released sometime during my freshman year of college, and I spent way too much time playing it. I’ve never really been a fan of school, and I had previously had attendance issues, so college was the worst time for me to find a game that I wanted to play more than I wanted to go to class. The problem is that I found this in PSO. I would pretty much stay up late … Read more…

On Blaugust Day 11 – Liebster Award

So, from what I understand this is not an actual award, but more of a chain letter. Basically you fill in some stuff and then tag other people and they fill it out, and so on and so on until the end of times. Anyways, so the first part is supposed to be 11 facts about myself, so here goes. 1. When I was 6 I got hit by a truck while crossing the street. They called my mom at work and told her I was dead. That was probably the first grey hair she ever had. 2. During my youth I skipped school A LOT. It’s surprising I finished public school on time. 3. I almost got expelled from high school, see #2 4. I have a nice scar on the back of my head which came from being an idiot. My sister and I thought it would be … Read more…

On Expansions And Rational Discussions (aka don’t be a jerk).

So last week Blizzard announced the next expansion for World of Warcraft to very mixed responses. A lot of the people I interact with online either play or have played WoW, and as I’ve mentioned before I’ve played it off and on since vanilla. The thing is a lot of people, including myself, were very vocal about how they were not pleased with what was shown, or how they felt let down by it. Like I said I was one of those people, but after I had made a few comments about it I realized that all I was doing was raining on the parade of the people who really do enjoy the game. Now I didn’t go in trying to specifically ruin someones day, but I know that it probably bothered the people who were thoroughly excited about the game to see so much negativity towards it. I think … Read more…

On Doctor Who Series 8 (some spoilers)

So, last night I had an email that Doctor Who series 8 was on Netflix. I’m a bit of a late comer to the whole franchise, not watching until Matt Smith had already started the role. So today I decided to burn my way through all 12 episodes that were available. The thing about series 8 is that this is the start of a new regeneration, and I had heard mixed things about the new regeneration. Mostly that it took some getting used too. I will say that overall the episodes were good, but I didn’t find that I had to adjust to the new Doctor. Other than that first episode I liked the changes to the character, and I thought that Peter Capaldi did a great job during the series. I think it was about halfway through the series that I decided that Peter Capaldi’s doctor was Doc Brown … Read more…

On What Game Company Would I Like To Work For

So there is a thread in the Blaugust Nook that is essentially an AMA thread where you ask a question for the person above you , and you have to reply to the question the next person asks. The question I got was: If you could work for a company that creates video games as their largest form of income, which company would you choose and why? I thought about this a little bit, and while my initial thought was Bethesda I decided that I really don’t know much about them as a company and they’re also more of the parent company that hires development studios to do the work. The company that I landed on was Blizzard/Activision. I decided to go with them because they have a wide variety of things that I have enjoyed. I played WoW steadily for many years, and I enjoy playing Hearthstone now. The … Read more…

On Preferred Gaming Platform – A Blaugust Post

So this is Day 7 of the Bluagust challenge. It seems that for now my site is back up and running after a few days of being down for whatever reason. Today’s post is brought to you by another writing prompt from the Blaugust Nook. What is your preferred gaming platform? Are you a multi-platform gamer or do you stick to one platform all the time? What is it about that gaming platform that you like? I will say it’s a tough choice to make to say which platform I prefer, but I would have to go with Consoles. I think that the reason for this partially stems from the fact that most of my early gaming experiences were on consoles. Yeah we had an Atari, and I played a lot of those math games on my dad’s old Hewlett Packard. But my first real fun gaming memories come from … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Heroic Naxxramas 2

So today’s post won’t be the longest post, I start on call at work today and haven’t really thought up a good topic just yet. So I’m going to simply write up a follow up post to the one from yesterday where I talked a little bit about what I was doing in Hearthstone over the weekend. During my lunch break yesterday I did a little research on decks that had successfully beaten heroic Sapphiron and Kel’Thuzad since that was my goal for the week. For Sapphiron the problem that I was running in to was that most mage decks, well any really but I went with mage, require you to have a specific rare/legendary card that I just didn’t have. In the case of the mage deck most tend to want you to have Ice Block, which makes you immune to lethal damage when triggered. The problem is that … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Heroic Naxxramas

So I’m pretty sure this is something that I’ve talked about before, but after spending the weekend playing Hearthstone again I feel like I should reiterate the point. *AHEM* RNG can be a real pain in the rear. As previously mentioned I’ve been working through Heroic Naxxramas in Hearthstone over the last week or so, mostly trying to get through at least one boss per day. As of last night I am up to Sapphiron, leaving just that one and Kel’Thuzad in order to earn the special card back for completing the Naxxramas adventure on heroic. I did manage to clear the four bosses in the construct quarter using decks I found at Hearthpwn, but got stuck on that stupid dragon for four hours before finally giving up for the night. I probably would have gone a bit longer, but today is Monday and I can’t just not go to … Read more…

On Rocket League

So over the last couple of weeks I’ve intermittently been playing a game I picked up on PSN since it was one of the free games for July. If the title didn’t give it away it is called Rocket League. Think soccer (or football depending on where you live) with rocket powered cars. I honestly didn’t give it much thought initially until I watched on of my favorite streamers (Day9) playing it. The game is pretty simple. You drive a car and you try to score goals. That’s it. The thing that I enjoy is that every match only lasts 5 minutes, unless you go in to overtime. There is no voice chat so if you’re just playing to have fun you don’t have to listen to people being jerks if you are not doing very well. Another nice thing is that if you’re like me and don’t feel like … Read more…

On Easing Back In To Things

So I haven’t written anything recently due to the personal life stuff (see previous post), and I’ve just had no motivation to do much of anythings. So this still won’t be a typical gaming post Per se, but there will be some so don’t worry. If you didn’t read the last post, and don’t want to, I’ve been fairly cut off from the world for the last 3 weeks due to someone I care about a lot passing away. I’ll admit that I’ve not been in a good place mentally. I haven’t had much motivation to do anything other than go to work and then go home and lay on the couch. I realize that this is not a good pattern to keep following so I’m using the whole Blaugust thing to try to help myself ease back in to the world. First off if you don’t know what Blaugust … Read more…
