On Games I’m Playing – Sidebar Update

So, today I’m feeling a bit mushy in the brain and didn’t come in with a good topic to discuss. This means that today’s post won’t be close to 2000 words, and will just be a brief synopsis of what I’m currently playing and what I have planned to play. You might also notice that I finally got around to updating my “What I’m Playing” sidebar since it hadn’t been updated in quite awhile. I feel like that is something I really should do a better job of doing since I do somewhat frequently rotate in a new game. For a couple of months I would have said the only game I was playing was Dark Souls 3, up until the point where I got all the trophies and haven’t picked it up since. So the first game you should see over there is No Man’s Sky which was the … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Karazhan Launch and Prologue

So yesterday saw the release of the next Hearthstone adventure “One Night In Karazhan” which is the next 4 wing single player set of challenges. This will add a total of 45 new cards over the course of the adventure which can be used in online matches or adventures. This release was a bit different then the previous adventures because there was no pre-order period. Instead the purchase option became available only when the adventure came online. Another difference was that they included a free to everyone prologue mission where you play as Medivh with his overpowered mage deck against Prince Malchezaar. Each player starts off with 30 health and a 30 point shield, so essentially 60 health. Once you work through this mission it will unlock the first wing, once purchased. Once you finish the match you get some new cards and probably a prompt to go buy the … Read more…

On Solo Tavern Brawls and Seasonal Overwatch

So to keep today’s post from being super short I’m going to talk about two things. The first of which is that Hearthstone released its first Solo Tavern Brawl. Now Hearthstone is no stranger to single player content as they have the Adventure mode, but this is the first time they’ve had a single player brawl. Normally brawls involve playing with, or against another player similar to standard/wild formats and allow you to complete daily quests for gold. This time however it’s just you and your deck versus the city of Stormwind. The brawl name “Storming Stormwind” has a simple mechanic, hit it as much as you can until you die. The trick is that you can’t lose. The npc “boss” that you’re fighting starts with a couple of things. It starts with 1 hit point, which goes up after every hit (instead of going down) so you can’t actually … Read more…

On Elder Scrolls Legends – Beta Impressions

So first off, today is the first day of the yearly thing my friend Bel tries to organize where people commit to posting as much as possible during the month of August. Previous years it involved posting daily for the entire month, which is seriously hard to do. This year it has shifted slightly and while you can still choose to post every day if you want it isn’t required. This year there were scheduling options, of which I have chosen weekday blogs. Meaning I’m going to try, emphasis on try, to post Monday through Friday for every week in August. I’m not entirely sure how a public list will be handled, but you can head over to his blog and check out some of the other participants. So for my first post, I’m going to talk a little bit about the Elder Scrolls Legends beta that I played over … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Heroic Naxxramas 2

So today’s post won’t be the longest post, I start on call at work today and haven’t really thought up a good topic just yet. So I’m going to simply write up a follow up post to the one from yesterday where I talked a little bit about what I was doing in Hearthstone over the weekend. During my lunch break yesterday I did a little research on decks that had successfully beaten heroic Sapphiron and Kel’Thuzad since that was my goal for the week. For Sapphiron the problem that I was running in to was that most mage decks, well any really but I went with mage, require you to have a specific rare/legendary card that I just didn’t have. In the case of the mage deck most tend to want you to have Ice Block, which makes you immune to lethal damage when triggered. The problem is that … Read more…

On Hearthstone – Heroic Naxxramas

So I’m pretty sure this is something that I’ve talked about before, but after spending the weekend playing Hearthstone again I feel like I should reiterate the point. *AHEM* RNG can be a real pain in the rear. As previously mentioned I’ve been working through Heroic Naxxramas in Hearthstone over the last week or so, mostly trying to get through at least one boss per day. As of last night I am up to Sapphiron, leaving just that one and Kel’Thuzad in order to earn the special card back for completing the Naxxramas adventure on heroic. I did manage to clear the four bosses in the construct quarter using decks I found at Hearthpwn, but got stuck on that stupid dragon for four hours before finally giving up for the night. I probably would have gone a bit longer, but today is Monday and I can’t just not go to … Read more…

On RNG or Why Can’t I Pull A Good Hand

So stretching a bit for a topic here, but I’m trying to post more again. This weekend, like the last few before it, were mostly spent playing Hearthstone and World of Warcraft. Most of Saturday I ended up working, but either way my gaming would have been the same. The majority of the latter half of Saturday night was spent on Hearthstone building and researching decks and trying them out. The one thing that always seemed to happen is that I’d lose a match because I couldn’t pull that one combination of cards that I needed, or in a couple cases top decked just the right card to pull off a very, very narrow victory. That happening just reminds me of how much I loath RNG in games. Granted I see the point of it, especially in a card game, but that doesn’t mean I can’t loathe it. Especially when … Read more…

On Hex vs Magic The Gathering

So this morning I’m typing up a post relatively early, for me anyways. I normally don’t start a day with a topic in mind and usually comes from something I’ve read online and has gotten me thinking. Today when I woke up I saw a twitter post from Joe Vargas (Angry Joe / Angry Joe Show) that linked to a lawsuit filed against Cryptozoic by Wizards of the Coast claiming copyright infringement based on the similarities between Cryptozoic’s game Hex: Shards Of Fate and Wizards of the Coast’s Magic the Gathering. So here’s the thing, yes the two games are similar. They’re both card based games that involve you spending money to get better cards in order to play other people. In Magic you draw “Land” cards which you use to play your creatures cards, instant cast card, etc.. where in Hex you use “Shards” for the same purpose. I’ll … Read more…

On Road Trips

If you listened to the last AggroChat podcast you’ll have heard this bit already. I’m going on vacation tomorrow driving up to visit my friends Belghast and Rae. It’s not a very long drive, but I don’t get to take these kinds of trips often. I’ll have my phone hooked up to my aux jack in my car listening to “Death Masks” by Jim Butcher as read by James Marsters. This series of books has quickly become one of my favorites, and nothing beats having Spike read to you. If you’ve never read the Dresden Files of books I would highly recommend it, and if you have that much more disposable income I’d get the audio book. While I won’t get in to the details of where I’m going, or where I’m driving from I’ll say that I’m very much looking forward to this trip. Partially because I’ve been really … Read more…
